White Bird in a Blizzard by Laura Kasischke

I decided to give this book a go after seeing the movie trailer. I can honestly say that I love this book! Laura Kasischke’s writing style is just so beautiful and captivating, it completely enthralled me. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to watch the movie or to anyone who just likes coming-of-age novels. White Bird in a Blizzard is the kind of book that you stay up past midnight reading. It is the type of book that you can easily get lost into. White Bird in a Blizzard is a coming-of-age novel about a girl named Katrina ’Kat’ Connors. One day Kat’s mother, Eve, disappears without any goodbye, except a phone call to her father. Throughout the novel we see as Kat grows up and how the absence of her mother begins to affect her.

What I loved about the book

The first thing I loved about the novel is Laura Kasischke’s writing style! I have to admit that most of her book was descriptions. Most people don’t like or appreciate descriptions but I certainly do! Her descriptions created so much images and feelings in me as I read, it was pure perfection. Her writing style was so entrancing, as I was reading the book I could not put it down. I did not read the book I inhaled it.
“A fairy tale with a twisted ending, one in which the sun sets like napalm on the prince and princess as they walk off, sticky all over with fire.”
― Laura Kasischke, White Bird in a Blizzard
Another thing I loved about the novel was how it was set in the lapse of four years. I loved how we were able to see as Kat grew older and older. I also loved how Kasischke also included flashbacks into her story. These flashbacks set a foundation for the story; it gave the reader an understanding of Kat’s mother and why Kat did not miss her.
She knelt at the side of my bed, kissed my cheek, and I woke, rubbed my eyes, looked up at her dreamily. The hall light shone in my eyes. There was a halo in her hair. It must have been that Tupperware bowl on her head.”

Final Verdict

Finally, White Bird in a Blizzard is a captivating and thrilling book. Laura Kasischke is a new author for me, and White Bird in a Blizzard was a perfect book to start off the journey that I wish to take on. I plan on reading more and more books by Laura Kasischke because I am currently still not over her writing style. I am still impressed that Kasischke manages to combine a coming-of-age story with a thriller to create an awesome book. In conclusion, this book is the kind of book that I will be recommending to everyone and the kind of book that I am planning on rereading
